Position Health Care
“Since the beginning of this debate, I have been clear: I will vote for a funding package for our country when it addresses the Republican-created health care crisis. My inbox is full of stories from West Michiganders who do not know how they will afford their health insurance when ACA credits expire at the end of this year. Without these credits, their premiums will rise by as much as 200% or more and we are already seeing Michigan insurance companies leaving the marketplace. This didn't have to happen. Republicans had a choice: extend the credits or shut down the government. They chose the most painful option for the American people at every turn—literally opting to take food off the tables of hungry Americans rather than provide affordable healthcare. Just last night, I introduced numerous amendments to this bill that would lower costs on health care. Republicans refused to consider every single one, leaving the American people high and dry. Tonight's bill is a raw deal for the American people, and a boon for billionaires. I'm voting no.”

Position Immigration Enforcement Oversight
“I cannot in good conscience support today's DHS funding bill that gives power to rogue and unaccountable federal enforcement agents. As a former Department of Justice attorney who worked on immigration enforcement issues at our nation's top law enforcement agency, I take national security and border safety seriously. I have cast tough, responsible votes to ensure our borders are secure and our nation is protected. The Department of Homeland Security plays a critical role in domestic and national security, as well as emergency preparedness, and those functions should be funded. But far too many Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are operating outside of the rule of law—terrorizing communities and even killing United States citizens. Enough is enough. Our job here in Congress is to provide a check on the other branches of government and on the agencies under them. That means funding the critical functions of DHS but also demanding accountability when enforcement actions put innocent lives at risk and undermine trust in law enforcement. While this funding bill passed, it did not pass with my vote, nor did it pass with the support of West Michiganders, who want to see secure borders and enforcement that lives up to the rule of law.”

Position Immigration Reform
“Our immigration system is deeply broken. As an attorney who has worked on immigration issues for 20 years, including enforcing our nation's immigration laws at the U.S. Department of Justice, I recognize how dire and urgent the need is to fix this system. Ultimately, this is Congress' problem to fix. At the heart of this matter is that our immigration system has not had a comprehensive update in almost 40 years– that inaction has created a national security disaster, an economic nightmare, and a humanitarian crisis. While we want the President taking action where possible, Executive action can only do so much. We had a bipartisan plan to address the border crisis, and Republicans threw it away for the sake of their political talking points. We need to reform our immigration system here in Congress, including our asylum system. The bipartisan Dignity Act does just that–by adding additional border patrol agents, establishing in-country asylum application centers, and creating additional pathways for job-seekers to come here legally. And while those who exploit our asylum system or violate our nation's immigration laws must be held accountable, we have to do so in a way that still enables legitimate asylum seekers to get the protection they need. We can, and we must, have an immigration system that is just, fair, efficient and humane. I'm as committed as ever to that goal.”
